IT’S BACK TO THE SEAMEN’S CLUB Sailors love and know our historical heritage Many young sailors from BELMOIRA, BERNIS, LAKE SAINT CLARE, AGIA DOXA, whose age is sometimes difficult to determine with certainty, come to FRANCE for the first time. A first stopover in Montoire or La Palisse (La Rochelle) and of which ROUEN constitutes, for most of the time a penultimate station, before returning home by plane far from Europe … What was not my amazement and astonishment at their interest in history and their questioning about Joan of Arc : what can a national heroine of the late Western Middle Ages represent for populations of a completely different tradition and culture ?). The second officer of the DISCOVERER tells me that he really likes ROUEN for its architecture. I recommend him to visit the cathedral, jewel of the Gothic heritage, and, if one has the opportunity to go inside to admire the height and perfect technicality of the vaults as well as the stained glass windows of the twelfth century of the choir. Another remark also puzzled me because it came up several times during our discussions : the sailors ask me if the city is « safe », that is to say safe… It seems that some stopovers whose geographical position I will not mention are dangerous and not recommended. I will comeback in the next newsletter on this notion of state order. THE NICO-PHILO MINUTE Can one culture be judged by one’s own: what is ethnocentrism? Should we prioritize the arts ? If the question of beauty has questioned philosophers a lot since antiquity (remember the 7 inspiring muses of all the arts), the Greek philosophers, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle and their school make beauty consist in the symmetry of the parts and the grandeur of the objects; They hardly consider the subjective aspect of beauty: that is to say that what is beautiful must lead to the adhesion of all … This is his universalism (« of beauty one does not discuss » would say Kant). Making the judgment taste as something relative to each one annihilates any reality of the idea that must be imposed unanimously. One can only recognize the genius of Mona Lisa, from the overture of Mozart’s Magic Flute. Without going into the considerations of whether the natural beauty (the beauty of an insect, a storm, or even an octopus) is superior to the artificial beauty (that of the parietal art of the Chauvet cave or the statuary of the caryatids of the Parthenon), propose a common definition: « Is beautiful the characteristic of a thing that through a sensory experience (perception through the 5 senses that each offer a different modality) or intellectual provides a sensation of pleasure or a sense of satisfaction. EVEN IN AUGUST IT’S HAPPENING AT THE SEAMEN’S Many visits from sailors and nice exchanges. Several boats, mainly bulk carriers were welcomed in our port at the end of the estuary in August: let’s mention the GIACOMETTI with a very nice Filipino crew as usual; the CARRIBEAN HARMONY, transporting wind propellers, one of whose sailors came for the last time to Rouen in 1992, and one of whose friends who came to him for the first time in Rouen did not forget to rave about the beauty of our medieval city. A more in-depth discussion pushed me to ask him about the number of islands in the Philippines: he gave me the astronomical figure of 9000 islands even if they are not all inhabited or habitable; the SACURA whose sailor named Ahmed, of Egyptian origin told me of his great joy to be in FRANCE after many years during his last visit and also told me to my great amazement not to know his next destination . The captain, of Ukrainian origin, told me that he had come to the port of Rouen before the construction of the Flaubert bridge. THE MENTAL HEALTH OF SAILORS Your Seamen’s club takes action! Issues of psychological suffering, management of acute emotional stress due to cultural or linguistic isolation due to the diversity of nationalities embarked, (« 8 months on board is not the exception, it’s the habit« ) promiscuity on board, the dangerousness,may be the most in the world, of the job, traumatic events as well as post- traumatic have been mentioned. A presentation was given in the presence of the volunteers. The afternoon was reserved for a visit to the ENSM (marine nationale high school) and a presentation by a psychologist specialized in psychiatry concerning the disorders of sailors during life on board. Indeed a psychological help exists for 2 years, the CRAPEM, even if it is not yet well known. IT’S MOVING IN THE PORT The 200 meters maneuver Many bulk carriers, such as the « KIM OLDENDORFF », the « MYRTO », the « KYPROS LOYALTY », the « SOCRATIS » or the « SARITA NAREE » often approaching or exceeding two hundred meters long, come to load at the bottom of the river, in Rouen, from the estuary of Le Havre located more than a hundred kilometers away. As the sinuosity of the river gives the impression that it meanders, some sailors have nicknamed it « Snake river » … indeed, it takes more than 6 hours of navigation in the meanders of the Seine to return to the mouth and the sea. THE NICO-PHILO MINUTE What do we need ? The french philosopher Simone Weil offers a reflection on what she calls the « needs of the soul ». Certainly, our body has needs (food, sleep, heat) but there are also needs of the soul. These needs of the soul are not met, for example, when one lives in constant fear. Fear of losing one’s job or fear of not having enough to live until the end of the month, diffuse fear of someone apprehended as a threat, or fear for someone’s life. Fear is a disease that paralyzes the soul. Some security is necessary to live. Security is an essential need of the soul. Security means that the soul is not permanently under the weight of fear or terror. The needs of the soul are « vital needs of the human being », « analogous to food », « that is, if they are not satisfied, man gradually falls into a state more or less close to a purely vegetative life ». Among these needs, the list of which can always be revised or supplemented, there is freedom but also obedience (to those who exercise authority and to the common law – as long as its legitimacy is recognized), equality but also hierarchy, security but also risk, freedom of expression but also truth, For truth is a need of the soul and our time is sick of no longer feeding on truth. Among the needs of the soul, there is also the recognition of personal dignity but also the punishment following a crime or misdemeanour, private property but also participation in collective goods, solitude and silence but also participation in a common task. SAILORS AND US Or the smiles of our encounters Whether for bulk on the left bank (metals, fertilizers, coal, peat) or for cereals(wheat) on the Soufflet silos on the right bank, the crews, of rather heterogeneous nationalities but mostly Filipino, are always very smiling and very friendly. It is with undisguised pleasure that we board to report our presence and our activity of conveying by minibus to those who wish to go to our pretty city, for a few hours and some shopping, the time of the stopover. Our coming is always very appreciated for men, who, so far away from their home and their family , and often for several months, are in great need of a breath of fresh air !! The welcome on board is always warm, often accompanied by a coffee taken at the mess or sometimes even a meal !! Let us salute the crews of the « NORMA » and the « AFRICAN KALMIA » who broke the records of attendance of the home since we had 30 and 22 visits respectively for these two buildings in 5 days. The historical past of the city did not fail to arouse their admiration as pointed out to me by the Indian sailors of the « SOFIA R » or the Ukrainian captain of the « …OWL ».
